What are LOX totes made out of?

We are proud to have crafted our LOX totes in recycled PU leather and recycled 420D polyester.
Recycled PU leather is an artificial leather made from recycled materials. It is made using waste recycled from a variety of sources, such as plastic bottles and textile waste. By reprocessing and transforming these materials, it is possible to create synthetic leather with a high quality appearance.
This recycled PU leather not only reduces the need for limited resources, but also effectively reduces the negative impact of waste on the environment. In its manufacturing process, the use of recycled materials greatly reduces the need for new raw materials, helping to reduce pollution and energy consumption.
In addition, recycled PU leather also performs well in terms of performance. It has the advantages of wear resistance, and easy cleaning, which is comparable to traditional PU synthetic leather. This material offers a sustainable alternative to traditional PU leather, by reducing the amount of waste that goes into landfills and supporting a circular economy.
The recycled PU uses approximately 30% less energy to make materials than virgin PU, by incorporating processes that save natural resources and lower greenhouse gas emissions from the use of certain chemicals.
We use recycled nylon as one of the main materials. It’s part of our effort to incorporate more sustainable fabrics into our products for a lower carbon footprint that’s better for the Earth. Recycled nylon is made from nylon waste from products that have already been manufactured, sold, used, and then discarded by consumers. It can also be made from the waste that’s left over during the processes where nylon is made into a product. Recycled nylon is made by taking nylon waste, including fishing nets and plastic scraps, and breaking it down into its individual chemical components. Once this is done, the components can be recombined into nylon sheets, fed into a spinneret to form fibres, and then woven together into a fabric material.
There are many advantages of recycled nylon, including:
No fossil fuels, reduces landfill waste, recycled nylon has been estimated to produce about 50% less CO2 compared to regular nylon, promotes a circular economy, it uses up to 90% less water and 50% less energy to produce vs. regular nylon. Both recycled nylon and regular virgin nylon are incredibly durable, and has the potential to be recycled and repurposed continuously.
The internal structural lining of the upper compartment is made out of PVC. The internal lining of the insulated compartment is made of expandable polyethylene.
We are committed to continually improving our sustainability efforts by regularly reviewing materials, partners and production processes.

What is vegan leather?

Our bags are mostly made of PU; PU stands for polyurethane, which is a type of plastic. LOX totes are made from recycled PU, which is made from recycled plastics. Unlike genuine leather, it is considered vegan because it does not contain any animal skin. Our PU material and water resistant polyester lining are certified recycled under the Global Recycled Standard. We underwent years of material sampling, to ensure the vegan leather of choice is buttery soft, and emulates real leather.
PU is just one 'vegan leather' - there are an increasing number of alternatives on the market, as both environmental and animal welfare concerns become more important to consumers.

How is vegan leather different from traditional leather?

Animal leather is the combination of an organic surface - a skin - before it's tanned with chemicals. It's then sprayed with various colours and surface treatments. Moisture can still impact leather, and leather can also dry out over time due to being derived from a skin. Conditioners are used to keep leathers soft, and water repellant sprays are used to keep moisture away - particularly necessary on suede leather - both can prevent damage and increase the life of a leather bag.
Polyurethane (PU) is a highly resilient, flexible and durable material with water resistant qualities, meaning leather cleaners and leather protectors are not needed. The protective layer that PU brings to the fabric surface itself means that a water repellant spray is not necessary.

Is the tote durable?

Polyurethane (PU) is a highly resilient, flexible and durable material with water resistant qualities, meaning leather cleaners and leather protectors are not needed.
The insulated compartment lining is similarly highly resilient, flexible and durable material with water resistant qualities, to cope with regular use and cleaning.

How do I look after my tote?

We recommend avoiding contact with rough or abrasive surfaces as this can damage the buttery soft vegan leather.
Store your handbag in the cotton dusters we supply - this will keep dust and dirt away from your bag when not in use and avoid contact with grease, oil, perfumes, cosmetics, as this can stain. Keep food and drink to the insulated compartment only, to avoid unnecessary stains.
Don’t store your tote in direct sunlight, such as in front of a window, or leave it on the seat of your car as excessive exposure to sun can damage the fabric.
Don’t stack totes on top of each other, and give it space when storing in your wardrobe – they can get crushed, and zips and hardware can scratch.
Rotating your accessories is essential to the longevity of your handbags.
If the tote is exposed to rain or water, let the leather dry naturally and do not use artificial heat to dry it.
Please note that premium quality does not mean that your tote is immune from scratches.
Please care for your tote accordingly, LOX is not liable for any abrasion wear as a result of use.

How do I clean the tote?

If dust or light dirt is evident, clean with a soft cloth and warm water.
For stubborn marks, add some dish detergent to your cloth or sponge. Avoid using an abrasive cloth or harsh cleaning products as they can damage the surface.
Eucalyptus oil is the final frontier, if the mark refuses to shift - a small amount on a clean cloth and rubbing gently, should yield positive results.
We do not recommend using traditional leather cleaning products on our totes.
The lining of our insulated compartment is water resistant and can be easily wiped clean and left open to dry.

Is the tote suitable for food storage?

Yes, the insulated bottom compartment is designed to maintain the temperature of your food and drinks for several hours. While not intended for long-term refrigeration, it maintains temperatures for everyday needs. To maintain the temperature of your food and drink for longer periods of time, we recommend using a food safe freezer pack.
